Strike A Chord 2009

Fifth Annual Dueling Pianos Event Features Art of Local Realtors

There’s No Place Like Home was the theme of the fifth annual Heartland Family Service Strike a Chord fundraiser for southwest Iowa children and families. The event was held Friday, July 31, at Harrah’s Convention Center, and included dueling pianos, a celebrity art auction, live and silent auctions and a raffle. Council Bluffs residents Doug and Deb Goodman served as the host couple of the event. Popular features included keepsake photos of guests with Dorothy, Glinda, the Wicked Witch and the Wizard of Oz. An enticing variety of regional favorite food and drinks from across America were served.

This year the event was sponsored by a record number of Council Bluffs businesses including Ameristar Casino Hotel, Harrah’s Casino & Hotel and Horseshoe Casino, J Development Company, Pearce Financial Services, Peoples National Bank, Treynor State Bank, and The Wal-Mart Foundation.

Strike A Chord 5 was conducted by the agency’s Southwest Iowa Advisory Committee, which included Don Andersen, Marcia Antworth, Suzi Brehmer, Alice Edwards, Jody Edwards, Lisa Gronstal, Carl Heinrich, Ted Hoff, Cindy Hoover, Rick Killion, Kelley Kulesa, Lydia Mason, Joanie Tekippe and Barb Walsh. Nancy Schulze is the Heartland Family Service vice president of Iowa professional services.

Proceeds from the fundraiser went directly to help children and families in Southwest Iowa. Agency services include support services for the homeless; transitional housing; a K-12 therapeutic school; mental health, substance abuse and compulsive gambling treatment; and parenting classes. Services are provided in nine Southwest Iowa counties, with eight office locations in Council Bluffs, Logan, and Glenwood.
