Since 1875, Heartland Family Service has been strengthening individuals and families in our community through education, counseling, and support services.

“Developing a Better Today” is a sixteen-session therapy group for teens (ages 14-19) struggling with emotional and interpersonal problems. This ongoing group is designed to develop skills that improve everyday functioning.

The group is based on the dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) model. The focus is on balancing change and acceptance in order to make a “life worth living.”

Teens learn hands-on skills to develop their ability to solve interpersonal problems effectively, to self-regulate their thoughts and emotions, and to tolerate stress in life without impulsive, destructive behavior...

The group is ongoing, and new clients are admitted approximately every 5 weeks. Clients must be involved in individual therapy while they are enrolled in this group. Insurance is accepted and a sliding scale fee is available.

Who Would Benefit?

Teens who have difficulty with:

  • Impulsivity
  • Anger
  • Mood swings
  • Self-injurious/Suicidal behavior
  • Interpersonal conflicts
